Announcing Support for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

April 21, 2016

Ubuntu 16.04 (called "Xenial Xerus") was released today, and we're happy to announce immediate support for Ubuntu 16.04.

Ubuntu 16.04 is the next in the line of Ubuntu Long Term Support (LTS) releases following 14.04. We've been preparing for 16.04 while it's been in beta the past months so ServerPilot users could begin using 16.04 as soon as it was released.

DigitalOcean also announced support for 16.04 today. We expect other server providers, such as Linode, Vultr, Rackspace, Amazon EC2, and Google Compute Engine, to release 16.04 images soon.

Ubuntu 16.04 includes MySQL 5.7, the latest version of the MySQL database server. MySQL 5.7 adds performance improvements and support for a native JSON data type.

Like other Ubuntu LTS releases, Ubuntu will provide support and security updates for 16.04 for five years. For 16.04, that means support through 2021.

For ServerPilot users, all of your applications will work seamlessly on Ubuntu 16.04. ServerPilot packages the latest versions of PHP, Nginx, and Apache for all Ubuntu LTS versions.

If you have a server running Ubuntu 14.04, you should not upgrade it unless you absolutely have to. Ubuntu 14.04 will still receive full security updates and bug fixes until 2019.
